Exploring Nanyang Technological University During Exchange

Exploring a new country and university during an exchange program is an exciting and unique experience. In 2022 fall semester, I had the opportunity to take part in an exchange program at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore. It was one of the most ineffable times of my life. I was able to explore the city, meet new people, learn about Singaporean culture, and take classes in a different environment. I also learned a lot from the challenges I faced during my exchange.

The city of Singapore is an awesome place, filled with sights and attractions to explore. There are plenty of exciting things to do, from the vibrant nightlife and delicious food to the gorgeous parks and gardens. I visited some of the top attractions such as Marina Bay Sands, Sentosa, and the Gardens by the Bay, as well as the Jurong Bird Park. My friends and I also had a extraordinary experience at the SkyPark Observation Deck - a yoga lesson in the early morning. Namaste! We practiced yoga while enjoying the beautiful view of the city of Singapore and watching the sunrise. It was an experience like no other. I also got to try lots of yummy local dishes like chili crab, Bak Ku Teh, and Hainanese chicken rice - so yummy!

Moreover, I have learnt more about the unique culture of Singapore by visiting various museums. I visited the National Museum of Singapore, the Asian Civilisations Museum, and the Singapore Art Museum. These museums provided insight into the history and culture of Singapore, and I gained a better understanding of the country's unique culture.

I was lucky to meet friendly people during my exchange at NTU. I made friends from different countries around the world, which was incredible! We were able to learn about each other’s cultures, customs and share our individual experiences. I had the pleasure of making some lifelong friends from Singapore, and to learn about their culture and customs. It was such an enchanting experience to celebrate the birthday of my Korean friend while I was studying at NTU! It was a memory I will cherish forever! :)

During my exchange, I could also improve my English and Mandarin speaking skills. I was able to practice with my friends from all over the world, as well as with locals in Singapore. This was a great opportunity to hone my language skills and gain a better understanding of both English and Mandarin. This was an invaluable experience that I am sure will continue to help me in the future.

One of the best parts of my exchange at NTU was taking classes in a different environment. I could learn from some of the best professors and get a different perspective on the subject material. I took classes in various fields, such as Chinese linguistics, engineering economics, civil engineering and maritime studies - a new field for me. It was intriguing to explore different topics and gain a different perspective on them.

I also visited Malaysia during my exchange, including Johor Bahru, Melaka, Penang, and Kuala Lumpur. I enjoyed Penang the most, as the food there was delectable. From the delicious street food to the delightful seafood, I tried many delicious dishes such as Char Koay Teow, Hokkien Prawn Mee and Nasi Lemak. I was so excited to try out many the delicious foods in Malaysia - it was a real treat for a foodie like me!

During my exchange, I faced some challenges, but I was able to learn and grow them. When I first arrived in Singapore, I found the English accent of Singaporeans a bit challenging to understand. But it didn't take me long to get used to it! I learned how to better adapt to different environments and cultures, and I gained valuable knowledge of the world. I've discovered that having an open mind and being brave is the best way to explore the amazing world around us!

My exchange at NTU was an wonderful experience that I will never forget - explore a new city, meet interesting people, and take classes in a different environment than what I was used to. It was an fascinating adventure and I am so grateful to have had the chance to experience this program. I was able to challenge myself in ways I never thought possible, push my boundaries, and develop my understanding of the world. I made friends from all over the globe, broadened my horizons, and even picked up some practical skills that I'm sure will come in handy in the future. All in all, my exchange at NTU was a truly unforgettable journey and I'm so happy to have been part of it.
